Prices from the shops we compare. Nobody pays for a place. How we rank

How we calculate

For capsules and pads we divide the price of a pack by the number of cups in it. We take the middle price (the median) of the products with a current price at the shops we compare, so one odd price does not decide the answer. For coffee beans and ground coffee we convert the price per kilo to a cup: 8 grams of beans for a cup from a bean-to-cup machine and 7 grams of ground coffee for filter coffee.

A bean-to-cup machine needs upkeep. We count 100 euros a year for descaler and cleaning and spread that over the cups you make in a year. VRT NWS arrives at about that amount on average. For Denmark and Sweden it is an estimate in kroner (750 DKK and 1100 SEK), not a measured amount. The payback time is the price of the cheapest bean-to-cup machine we list, divided by what you save each month compared with your current system.

The sources differ. Keukenloods names 7 to 9 grams of beans for a single espresso and 12 to 14 grams for a large 200 ml cup of filter coffee. We use 8 grams and 7 grams, so small cups. VRT NWS includes upkeep and finds a cup from a bean-to-cup machine with fresh beans the most expensive. Test-Aankoop writes that a bean-to-cup machine costs more to buy, but pays off in the long run because beans are cheaper than capsules. That is why we show both sides.
